Computer program reminder

This is a reminder that no downloads of any kinds are allowed on library computers that are not previously authorized. This includes any internet toolbars (Yahoo, Google, etc). Also the library does not allow any instant messaging on staff computers at this time.

If you are trying to access a website that needs a download, you need to consult with me before downloading anything.

Over the past 6 months the library's computer system has had increasing amounts of problems and when investigating and looking at files and updates, I am seeing a huge increase in the amount of personal web browsing happening on staff computers. This is not only a bad use of library paid staff time, but just opens up the floodgates to bring in viruses, Trojans, spyware and more.

I realize that we live in an internet based society and it is hard to not want to take some personal time to do this, but all equipment here is paid for and maintained by the library and when personal surfing starts to endanger the security of the system than it is no longer acceptable.

Main websites such as Amazon, Gmail, yahoo mail, cnn, weather channel, you-tube, etc. are usually trustworthy and do not cause problems. But once you start wandering away from the big name, well-known sites you are opening up a Pandora’s box of problems. For example: YouTube videos can be found on many, many more sites other than YouTube. Many of these sites purposefully pull these popular videos in and when you click to play it there are embedded viruses or spyware.

In the past we had someone who was looking at coupons to print and this brought in a virus. The same thing has happened with a recipe website.

Please try and keep personal surfing to a bare minimum. Also remember you can take your break and use one of the public computers (usually the 15 minute express station is available) and surf to your hearts content with no danger of harming the library's system.

I am pleading with you to voluntarily be aware and supportive of this request. If father problems continue to arise from this, I do not want to be forced to mandate no personal use at all.

P.S. I know some staff will not like the content of this blog, but please think of it this way, how much more would you not like NOT having your computer for an hour, a day, possibly a whole week. And a person on one computer does have the ability to take down the whole system, so it's not just you/your computer your taking chances with.
