Holding items for patrons

When a patron speaks to reference over the phone and asks for a book to be pulled and held for them to pick-up, please use the following procedure.

  1. Check out item to "holdshelf-che".
  2. Fill out one of the white forms with patron's name, your initials, and the date. These forms are located in the middle drawer at reference along with the rubber bands.
  3. Rubber band white form around book and deliver to circulation to be placed on the hold shelf.

The hold shelf is where circulation looks for items that are being held for patrons (library items, not lost and found type items). Sticky notes have a tendency to fall off, and items simply set on the desk can be mislaid in all the bustle.

Please follow these procedures even when the patron says they are "on their way" or "will be here in five minutes". They usually are not. The situation is exacerbated by shift changes when no staff who knows about the book are still here. It is not good customer service to send patrons back and forth between desks. It makes us all look bad.

It is also important that last names are spelled correctly so they can be filed and found. If they aren't in the right place circ will just refer patrons to ref to place a hold. When circ sends patrons to ref for help, it is with an attitude of respect for that department and our coworkers.
